Hair Holds Memories, Gouache, 14X17.5 in., 2025

hair holds memories

Inspired by Frida Kahlo’s ‘Self Portrait with Cropped Hair’, this self portrait is a refection of letting the weight of my hair go. Having curly hair, I spend a lot of time maintaining it. While for the most part it is my connection to my femininity, after a point it was more of a burden than it was self care. It is said that hair holds memory and I felt that once I cut it, I was free to start a new chapter in my life.
